We Are Fugazi from Washington, D.C.

United States / 2022 / 96'

Plot

This film commemorates the 20th anniversary of the final live performance by Washington, D.C. post-hardcore band Fugazi, which took place on November 4, 2002, at The Forum in London. We Are Fugazi from Washington, D.C. is a collage of concert footage shot and contributed by audience members, alongside rare archival material of Fugazi, curated by Joe Gross, Joseph Pattisall, and Jeff Krulik.

The film pays tribute to Fugazi’s extraordinary power as a live band, offering longtime fans a chance to relive those performances while giving a new generation a glimpse of what they missed. This unique assemblage of archival footage celebrates both the fans and their cameras as much as the band itself: a collision and coexistence of fleeting moments onstage and moments preserved through the camera lens.

Director

Joe Gross

Joe Gross

Joe Gross brings an essential historiographical perspective and sharp analytical gaze to this directorial trio. As a veteran music and cultural journalist, he has spent decades dissecting the evolution of punk, hardcore, and alternative music for prominent American publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, and The Austin Chronicle. His transition into documentary filmmaking and curation is backed by this deep critical background, making him the key architect in organizing the aesthetic chaos of found footage and infusing the project with a political and conceptual coherence faithful to the band's radical independent ethics.
Jeff Krulik

Jeff Krulik

Jeff Krulik is a legendary figure in international cult cinema and a true pioneer of underground anthropology. After working for years in television, his name became etched into the history of alternative documentary filmmaking thanks to Heavy Metal Parking Lot (1986)—a masterpiece of DIY cinema that captured the raw, fascinating microcosms of music fandom. His filmography, which features standout titles like Led Zeppelin Played Here and Heavy Metal Picnic, is defined by a judgment-free lens, a sharp sense of humor, and an unwavering obsession with documenting the fringes of pop culture and the raw passions of urban subcultures.
Joseph Pattisall

Joseph Pattisall

Joseph Pattisall is a filmmaker, editor, and cinematographer deeply rooted in the visual identity and urban history of Washington, D.C. Specializing in excavating street culture and community memory, he directed the acclaimed feature The Legend of Cool "Disco" Dan (narrated by Henry Rollins), which brilliantly intersected the graffiti underground with Go-Go music and the political tensions of the 1980s. His narrative prowess in editing raw, marginal footage has led him to work on prominent projects like Showtime’s Rolling Like Thunder, solidifying his reputation as an essential cinematic voice for understanding contemporary American counterculture.
