Longa noite
Spain / 2019 / 90'
Plot

After graduating in documentary filmmaking from the San Antonio de los Baños school in Cuba, he directed the documentaries Pic-nic (2007) and Arraianos (2012). Premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, Arraianos received awards for best film in Buenos Aires (BAFICI), Peru (Transcinema), and Seville (European Film Festival). In 2019, he returned with his first fiction film, Longa noite, which participated in the most prominent film events (Locarno, Toronto, New York Film Festival, Viennale, Rotterdam, and Jeonju) and won awards at festivals in Switzerland, Argentina, Peru, Russia, France, Portugal, and Spain. On its commercial release in Spain, Longa noite was hailed as “one of the key titles of the year” (Sofilm magazine) and was nominated for best European film at the Gaudí Awards of the Academia de Cinema Català. With Todo es cárcel (2026), Enciso continues to further explore his main hallmarks as a filmmaker: careful work with natural actors inspired by literary texts and the poetic intertwining of reality, fiction, and history that links him to the contemporary European cinema movement found in Straub-Huillet, Pedro Costa, and Eugène Green. For Enciso, as for these filmmakers, true transformation does not come from creating something radically new, but from rediscovering and reevaluating the principles of cinema that lie forgotten in the established order.
